Today we decided to drive the perimeter of Maui and it was pretty fantastic. I took almost 300 pictures today and I wanted to post more than this but that would be ridiculous. Perhaps at the end of my trip I'll do a post of leftover images.
So this all-day trip we took was very cool. We started driving in one direction and then at one point we were told to restart our odometer. At certain mile markers, there were places to stop and visit. Here are a few of the awesome places we saw and experienced...
Breakfast at Kihai Cafe (voted best breakfast on the island 3 years in a row). I got their pork fried rice with eggs over easy. It is one of two of their best known dishes. I'm going back later this week to get their banana macadamia nut french toast, which is the other of the two best dishes they serve for breakfast. I couldn't decide between the two meals today and the guy that worked there made me flip a coin. Haha.
A tiny little surfer. He wasn't too bad either.
This was the first place we stopped. We parked on the side of the road and hiked to two different waterfalls/swimming holes. It was beautiful. Parts of the hike were through water.
A canal/tunnel.
The second waterfall.
My mother and the waterfall.
Scenic Overlook.
The whole family at a scenic overlook.
Then we stopped at Aunty Sandys where we got banana bread and dried fruit and nuts. I also ordered a strawberry, banana, apple and pineapple smoothie. It was delicious. Aunty Sandy is known to have the best banana bread - and it was really, really good. Served warm.
This was my favorite place of the day and my pictures DO NOT do it justice. We climbed all over these lava rocks, took pictures, found all sorts of crabs and sea life, and enjoyed the view. All in flip flops.
Two pretty cool trees.
The lava rocks were so sharp. I'm surprised I did all my hiking today in flip flops. Actually, we all did.
Sea creatures. They look like purple scrubbing bubbles, you know, that bathroom cleaner!?
Click to enlarge. SO COOL! My sister and I tried to see how far out we could get on the lava rocks. Actually quite scary with the huge waves crashing against the rocks. We were splashed by so much water and she got some lava rock wounds but it was all worth it.
Dead crab.
Mmm! Fresh coconut!
Awesome flowers.
Black sand/rock beach. Beautiful. I can't ever get enough of the turquoise colored water.
Next stop: Red Sand Beach. This is two parts of the treacherous path leading to it. It was really slippery.
But it was worth it. The only way to get to the red sand beach is to hike the side of a cliff. There were some nude swimmers too!
The best.
Then we kept driving and came across THE most desolate place. This grass was grayish white for miles!
As we got closer to civilization, the land became greener. Very strange.
Beautiful.
And to end the awesome day I had an awesome burger. Pineapple, mushroom and gorgonzola with onion and lettuce. Mmm!
